Workshops

Ranch-based workshops where students learn to shape wood with hand tools, build useful things, and leave with skills that outlast the weekend.

Every ranch has timber, and every timber pile is an opportunity. Our woodworking workshops turn ranch wood into working knowledge — from felling and milling to joinery and finishing. Participants leave with calluses, a finished piece, and a better eye for grain and structure.

01

Timber from the ranch

We start with wood grown on YMR land or salvaged from ranch improvements. Students learn to read a log, mill it to dimension, and choose boards for strength and figure before a single cut is made.

02

Hand-tool fundamentals

Sharpening, planing, chiseling, and sawing by hand. We emphasize control and accuracy over speed, so students understand how wood behaves and how to correct a cut instead of starting over.

03

Build something real

Each workshop produces useful ranch pieces: stools, benches, cutting boards, tool totes, and simple furniture. Projects are chosen to teach joinery, layout, and finishing that transfer to bigger work.

04

Weekend intensives

Classes run two to four days with lodging and meals on the ranch. Mornings are instruction; afternoons are bench time under the guidance of working makers who have built everything from barns to boats.
